Hello!

I am Katie Mason (pronouns she/her), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California, who believes in helping people transform their challenges into strengths. With over a decade of experience working in mental health with children, youth and adults I utilize an eclectic mix of modalities to fostering personal growth and healing.

I firmly believe in the incredible capacity for change that resides within each person. With a relational orientation at the heart of my practice, I strive to create a compassionate and understanding space where you can explore your experiences and cultivate your strengths. My approach is built on the conviction that all humans resilient and capable of achieving far more than they might initially realize.

My style is greatly informed by my background in children and family work. Prior to graduate school I worked for several youth development programs in Seattle, Washington. During graduate school at UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare, I studied and trained at San Mateo County, Children and Family Services. Later I transitioned to more clinical work and was a mental health consultant to children, parents and multidisciplinary providers in the pediatric clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Enjoying working more in-depth with clients, I took a position as a therapist at an out-patient mental health clinic for children and adolescents in San Leandro, CA. There, I served high-risk clients who were often coming out of psychiatric hospitals, experiencing high-family conflict and/or struggling with eating disorders. I feel grateful for my experience and training, which has made me a “generalist,” with a bit of knowledge in a lot of different things and a constant learner. However at the heart of my background is the understanding how environment shapes individuals and all people are inter-connected, I bring an attachment-based and developmental lens, and I’m a holistic and trauma-informed practitioner.

I am an American woman of Eastern European Jewish and British descent who speaks Spanish and often works with monolingual Spanish speaking parents and bilingual youth. I grew up on the East Coast and have now lived on the West Coast for 15 years. During under-graduate school I lived and studied for a year in Valparaiso, Chile. And more recently I spent a year living in small surf town in Panama with my family.  I bring a sense of curiosity, humility, profound respect and personalism to my work with individuals and families.

I believe mental health is a human right and work to advance mental health as part of a social justice and anti-racist movement.  Many of my clients are from marginalized groups, such as immigrants, BIPOC, Queer and Trans folks, and individuals with disabilities. I am sensitive to those suffering from oppression due to their identity and work to support liberation in the context of psychotherapy. My services are welcoming and supportive. I work hard to acknowledge my privilege, while finding the common humanity in us all.

In addition to being a therapist, I am the mother to two children and enjoy spending my times with loved ones and in nature. You can often find me running in the Berkeley or Oakland hills, camping in the Sierras, visiting beaches, traveling to new places, reading, gardening and enjoying the sunshine.

I hope this sounds like a good fit. I would be honored to partner with you on your journey and look forward to connecting soon.
